Causes of Snoring

There are many possible causes of snoring, and they depend on different factors. In fact, anything that causes the air passageways to narrow will cause snoring.

\"causesSnoring is caused when there is a narrowed passageway between the nose and the throat. The passageway narrows because the muscles in your throat are more relaxed when you sleep. When inhaling oxygen while the passageway is narrowed, air will have to move faster than before, and will hit the tissues of the soft palate and the uvula with more force causing vibrations which in turn create snoring sounds.

- Obstructed nasal airways: Snoring can be caused by a stuffy nose (brought on by a cold or sinuses). When the nose becomes stuffy, less air can go through the nasal passage so the throat has to pull air in through the mouth with extra force, which eventually causes snoring.
- Aging: The normal process of aging produces the relaxation of the throat muscles, which in the end results in snoring.
- Anatomical anomalies: The throat and nose anomalies, like inflamed tonsils or adenoids, nasal polyps, or deviated nasal septum cause exaggerated narrowing of the throat during sleep and thus lead to snoring.
- Consumption of alcohol: Snoring also can be brought on by consuming too much alcohol before bedtime. Alcohol promotes muscle relaxation and drowsiness, making throat muscles to relax thus narrowing the air passageway encouraging snoring.
- Outside causes: Allergies, sedatives, smoking, disruption of normal sleep patterns or decreased lung capacity may also be related with snoring.
- Obesity: Overweight people have a greater risk of developing snoring because fatty tissue around the neck obstructs the normal flux of air through the throat.
- Sleep apnea: Excessive sagging of throat tissues produced by sleep apnea causes your airway to collapse, preventing you from breathing. Eventually, it increases snoring.
- Incorrect sleep position: The most common cause for snoring is sleeping in an incorrect position. By doing so, the intern air passages are not held in the correct position, leading to obstruction which promotes snoring.

\"whatAlthough there may be several causes for snoring, the most common is still maintaining an incorrect position during sleep time. That is the reason why you should first try to correct your posture during the night. Either way, keep reading to learn how to reduce snoring.
